It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
