It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
