It might look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more productive part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
