simple balance sheet template
It may look like a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
