It may seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
