simple business card template
It might seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every single new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
