It might look to be an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
