It may seem like a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same procedure for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
