simple expense report template
It may seem like an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
