It may seem to be an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
