simple job application template
It may look to be a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
