simple lesson plan template
It might look like a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
