It might look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
