It might seem like a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
