It may look like an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
