simple report card template
It might seem to be an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
