It may seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
