It might look to be a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
