simple scope of work template
It might seem like a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
