It might look to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
