It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every single new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
