It might look like an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
