It might look like a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
