It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
