It might seem like an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
