It may seem to be a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
