It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more productive part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
