It may seem like an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
