It might look to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
