It might look to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
