It might look like a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more productive part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
