step and repeat template
It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
