It may look to be a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
