It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more effective part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
