It may look like an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
