It might look to be an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
