It may seem like a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
