It might look to be a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
