It may look like an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
