It may look to be a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
