It may seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
