It might look to be an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
