It might seem to be an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
