It may look to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
