template for a cover letter
It may seem to be a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
