template for a resume
It might seem like an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
