It may look to be a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
