It might seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
