It may look to be a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more effective part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
