It might seem to be an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
